French Athlete Assaults 14 Year-Old Girl Mascot After Winning Track Event

French athlete Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad has gained track and field infamy in the lead-up to the London Olympics. The 27-year-old had just won gold in the European Championship's 3000 metre steeplechase in Helsinki on Sunday when audience cheers quickly subsided into shock over his subsequent actions. Rather than appearing happy about his 8.33.23-minute victory, the Algerian-born athlete walked over to the championship's mascot "Appy", which was being worn by a 14-year-old girl, and smacked a gift bag out of her hands and shoved her with both hands. The girl was believed to have been slightly winded by the unexpected attack but otherwise unharmed. Yet championship organisers were livid, according to Karjalainen news. Championship director Mika Muukka told the news agency that "hopefully, the EAA (European Athletics Association) would deal with the case". It was not the first time that Mekhissi-Benabbad had picked on a mascot. After winning the same race at the 2010 championships in Barcelona, he asked a mascot to kneel in front of him before he pushed it to the ground.

C'mon. C'mon, boss, let's go. You wanna scrap," she replies laughing. Then she continues: "Do it. Go ahead. No balls. Oh you're a tough guy. Hey boss, show me your nine." The boy's mother posted the troubling footage hoping "that you watch this video and help us spread awareness to other parents. My son has suffered and I don't want any other child to go through what my child has been through." The teacher's assistant has since been suspended pending an internal investigation by the daycare.

If you were looking for a sign that all those warnings at the gas pump mean something, well, here's your sign. Footage captured by a security camera shows flames shoot up and lick the man before spilling onto the concrete below him -- just feet from the pump. He flees, leaving everyone else at the station in danger. Just seconds later, a quick-thinking doctor jumps to the man's aid and douses the flames with a bucket of water.

Japanese Scientists Use Stem Cells to Grow Human Liver in the Skull of a Mouse

Using stem cells from human skin, Japanese scientists have grown a small human liver inside the skull of a mouse. Hideki Taniguchi and Takanori Takebe from Yokohama City University used stem cells generated from human skin cells and developed them into percussor liver cells. Then they added other cells from umbilical cord blood vessels. The combination of cells then "guided itself" to form a small structure similar to liver tissue, Takebe said. "We mixed and graded the cells onto the culture dish and they moved to form a cluster," he said. "It was a surprising outcome from what was, to be honest, an accident."

Policeman Stops Suicidal Man From Jumping Off Building

A daring rescue was captured on camera last week when a policeman saved a suicidal man from jumping from an apartment building in Ningbo, China. State television footage shows the desperate man, clad in blue jeans with no shirt on, straddling the gap between two window ledges at least four stories above street level as an anxious crowd looks on. One policeman distracted the man by talking to him through a loudspeaker, allowing other cops to get up to the roof and rappel down the side of the building, out of the would-be jumper's line of sight, the Telegraph newspaper reported, quoting Chinese state television. An officer then swings around the corner of the building, grabs the distraught man around the waist and pins him to the side of the building. Rescuers inside can be seen reaching through the windows to secure the man's feet with ropes so he can't leap to his death. Police believe the man was threatening to commit suicide because of family problems, the newspaper reported.
