I would love to “get to know” the Orthodox community (as you suggest), as I live in a fairly large Jewish neighborhood. However, (and I cant speak for how it is in America), but the Orthodox Jewish community in Europe is one of the unfriendliest and close-minded groups of people I have come across.  In my experience, they are cold and ignore any outsider who tries to be friendly. When I’ve even just said a friendly greeting, I get nothing but extremely nasty and rude remarks muttered at me in Yiddish.  Is it like this in American Orthodox communities, or is this hostility unique to our neck of the woods?

it really depends what sect you’re referring to because some are more open than others- Chabad, for one, is extremely welcoming wherever you go! I would suggest contacting a Chabad Rabbi if you’re interested in knowing more. If you would like to find one go to www.chabad.org
