Meet The Candidates For Governor Who’ll Sign Away Your Rights

They’ve done it before, and they’ll do it again: these anti-choice candidates will take away your rights the second they’re elected.

Bob Beauprez (Colorado)

• Beauprez is about as anti-choice as they come. When he got the chance, he answered “yes” to every vetting question from Colorado Right to Life, saying he would ban abortion including in cases of rape or incest.

• But now he’s trying to downplay his extremist record. He’s been lying about his position, even calling himself “pro-choice” (ha!), and trying to pretend governors have limited impact on reproductive rights (we beg to differ, and so do the women in Texas, Missouri, and Ohio, just to name a few.)

• He said in a debate that an IUD is an “abortifacient,” even though science proves otherwise. Because that’s his belief, he threatened to end a program that’s decreased teen pregnancy and prevented abortions.

Sam Brownback (Kansas)

• He compared the anti-choice movement to the abolitionist movement that helped abolish slavery. WHAT?!

• Brownback’s signed into law some of the most extreme anti-choice legislation in the country, shutting down all but one clinic in the state of Kansas.

• While the state’s economy has gone down the toilet, he wasted more than a million in tax dollars to defend his anti-choice laws against lawsuits.

Nathan Deal (Georgia)

• As governor, he signed legislation that makes it illegal for insurance policies to cover abortion, including in cases of rape and incest.

• Deal made it illegal for women to access abortion care after 20 weeks, citing fake science as his reasoning.

• Created a state anti-choice holiday – yes, seriously.

Paul LePage (Maine)

•Paul LePage vetoed legislation to provide preventive health care to 13,700 women.

•He once said to an audience regarding abortion, ““Each and every one of you should thank your parents because you’re here today and you’re not one of the victims.” UGH.

• Slashed the budget for family planning by $400,000.

Rick Scott (Florida)

• He vetoed $1.5 million dollars in funding for health care, including basic medical for adults and children, birth control and family planning, immunizations, and STD screening.

• Scott signed a bill requiring women to receive an invasive ultrasound before having an abortion.

• Gov. Scott promised to help create jobs when he first took office, but went straight to limiting women’s access to abortion care.

• Rick Scott played doctor by shortening the amount of time women have to get a legal abortion.

• Good ol’ Gov. Scott also vetoed funding for 30 rape crisis centers because he said they weren’t needed – even though they’ve helped more than 1 million Florida women.

Rick Synder (Michigan)

•Snyder believes that “human life begins at conception”, which means trouble for birth control and access to abortion care if he’s elected again.

•He signed a law which imposes unnecessary regulations on abortion clinics to force them to shut down.

•Women in Michigan lost the ability to meet with a doctor remotely to get the abortion bill because of a bill Snyder signed that bans telemedicine.

Scott Walker (Wisconsin)

•Scott Walker has been endorsed by extreme anti-choice groups Wisconsin Right to Life and Wisconsin Family Action. Probably because he backed personhood.

•That new law that forces women to get an invasive ultrasound before they can get an abortion? Walker signed that into law.

•He stopped enforcing Wisconsin’s birth control coverage law, saying, “it all depends on what you define as birth control.” (Funny, the FDA does have a list of what counts as birth control.)

•To top it all off, now he’s lying about being anti-choice. The same man who said he opposes abortion including in cases of rape or incest is running ads making him sound reasonable and dodging questions that prove otherwise.
