7 Pro-Choice Pop Sensations From The 2000s

Who doesn’t look back on the early 2000s with nostalgia and immense gratitude that those late 90s-early 2000s butterfly hair clips are no longer in style? There were so many teen idols and pop sensations it was hard to keep track of them all. Here are some of our favorite pop stars from the last decade that you maybe didn’t realize are also pro-choice!

1) P!nk

Blazing onto the scene in 2000 with the hit single, “There You Go,” Pink has since been an outspoken advocate of women’s rights and pro-choice values. She rallied at the 2004 March for Women’s Lives in Washington, D.C. and writes on her blog, “Personally I am pro-choice, because I think people have the right to make their own decisions and evaluations as to what is and what is not to be done with them, especially about such life changing things like having a child.”

2) Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake quickly became the breakout star of pop boy-band *NSYNC and has steadily increased his popularity with time. Justin and wife Jessica Biel rallied for President Obama in the 2012 election, citing women’s rights as a factor in their decision to endorse. Jessica stated, “Nobody should be able to say what you can do with your body,” to which Justin added, “What the woman chooses is usually right.”

3) Avril Lavigne

Canadian punk-rock princess Avril Lavigne stole our young hearts with hits like “Complicated” and “Sk8ter Boi,” but did you know that she also supports women’s reproductive health and freedom? Avril asked fellow Canadians to “Raise Your Voice” in a campaign to support the pro-choice Women’s College Hospital in Toronto.

4) Christina Aguilera

One of the original princesses of pop, Christina’s single “Genie in a Bottle” is a song that many people who came of age in the early 2000s will always remember. Christina is known for her pro-women anthems and she also participated in the March for Women’s Lives in 2004.

5) Mary J. Blige

Singer-rapper Mary J. Blige has been in the music scene since the late 90s, but her song “No More Drama” made it onto Billboard’s Hot 100 list in 2001. Mary J. showed her pro-choice values when she appeared in a “Yes We Plan” ad campaign for Obama supporting reproductive rights.

6) Mandy Moore

Singer Mandy Moore introduced herself to the world with sugary-sweet pop hit “Candy.” She’s been very involved in raising awareness about reproductive rights around the globe, and tweeted support for Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis during her epic filibuster against an extreme anti-choice omnibus bill. She also appeared in Saved! satirizing anti-abortion fanatics in high school.

7) Lily Allen

British singer Lily Allen won us over with “Smile” in 2006. She’s since spoken out on a woman’s right to choose, tweeting, “Can small minded idiot blokes stop telling women whether or not they're entitled to abortions please? #enoughnow.”
