These Are The Most Talked About Cars In The U.S.

In order to find out which states are the most car-obsessed, Autonation Parts Direct examined over 750,000 tweets, looking at how different states talked about cars, specifically brand preference and imports over domestic. Below are the results:

According to the study, Colorado not only talks about cars the most, but the residents there do so at nearly twice the amount as any other state. The other states rounding out the top five are: New York, California, Michigan, and Nevada.

Residents in Idaho are the least car-obsessed, followed by Wisconsin, Montana, Arkansas, and New Mexico.

"In terms of tweets, no other manufacturer comes close to Ford. Though all three major U.S. car manufacturers are represented above, Ford claims the top spot in 46 states."

Since Ford was the heavy-favorite, the study removed Ford tweets completely, exposing Chevy as the clear runner-up with 30 states, representing nearly all of the East Coast, South, and Midwest.

And with the removal of both Ford and Chevy tweets, Jeep took the top spot of the remaining manufacturers with 15 total states. As you can see, this graph shows more of a variation across the nation and no real regional trends in terms of car preference.

Not surprisingly, Ford and Chevy dominated the conversations about specific car models, collectively capturing the top spot in all but five states. The results also showed American loyalty to U.S. auto brands with imports being the favorite in just four states.

In an odd twist, when all domestic and import mentions were added up, the study found that only 10 states mentioned domestic manufacturers more than imports, contradicting the previous graph, which shows a strong preference to U.S. models.

Further examining this data, it was concluded that Germany and Japan led all mentions of imported cars with the East Coast overwhelmingly preferring German brands.

And finally, the above graph shows a breakdown of the total mentions by country. As you can see, the United States dominated all car talk, followed not-so-closely by Germany and Japan before a massive drop-off with Italy and the United Kingdom rounding out the top five.
