This morning, the United States men’s hockey team defeated Russia 3-2 in an incredible shootout finish that went eight rounds long.
After a scoreless first period, Russia got on the board with a goal from team captain Pavel Datsyuk midway through the second period, but USA responded shortly after with a power play goal from Cam Fowler.
USA then took the lead in the third period on a power play goal from Joe Pavelski. Russia tied it up on another goal from Datsyuk, who was later stripped of a third goal that would have given Russia a late 3-2 lead, after the net became dislodged and the goal waved off on a controversial call.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went into a shootout where American goaltender Jonathan Quick came up big, proving why he deserves to be the starter for Team USA.
But the real hero was St. Louis Blues forward T.J. Oshie, who scored every shootout goal for Team USA, going four for six in the process and putting away the game-winner.
It was an intense game from the start and turned out to be one of the best hockey games in recent history, despite this only being the qualification round of the Olympics.
USA’s next opponent will be Slovenia on Sunday.
