lupinelle a year agoOkay, here’s the Cornucopia Institute page on Kashi. Reading around on this, the pesticide information seems to have come from the USDA. This picture apparently came from a single health food store in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The USDA does, in fact, do pesticide residue testing. I have worked with those numbers (when I was working in the stone fruit business in California). The deal is that certain pesticides can be picked up at the level of tiny fractions of parts per million, levels that are literally less than a fraction of a percent of the allowable maximum. So the fact that pesticides were detected does not mean the product contains a dangerous level of pesticides. (The USDA numbers are also where that “Dirty Dozen” list of produce that the Environmental Working Group comes from - so when you see that, remember that what’s being detected is on the level of a drop of water in an Olympic swimming pool.) As for the GMO soy, most Kashi products are not organic - they’re conventionally produced, can thus legally be labeled as “natural,” (a term that has no formal definition, unlike “organic” in the U.S.) and conventionally produced foods are allowed to use GMO soy. In fact, almost all of the conventional soy produced in the U.S. is GMO - greater than 80%. If you want to avoid it, you must buy organic. Kashi has been a Kellogg’s product since 2000, and Whole Foods has been carrying it at least since the middle 1990s. (As a matter of full disclosure, I worked for Whole Foods from 1995-2000, joined Kellogg’s in 2000, worked there for three years, then worked in the stone fruit biz in California for another four years. I eat organic when possible, but don’t at all sweat it when I can’t.)

Jennifer O. a year ago“omg kashi crackers have GMOs.” uh yeah like almost every other food we eat so stop pretending you suddenly care about GMOs. I’m not saying its okay; quite the contrary. no one cares about the GMOs in milk, meat and other products. instead of boycotting kashi, we should boycott Monsanto all together. Wheat Thins can give you cancer too for christ’s sakes. it’s just excessive now.
