I love Buzzfeed. I really do. Stuff like this, though, is why it’s sometimes hard to love it. A story appears one place, then gets picked up by another, and then to another, and everybody rewrites it so they’re not just copying somebody else’s content, and in their well-meaning attempt to not plagiarize, it ends up being like a game of telephone. First off, following the trail of sources takes you back to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which states no source for their story. Googling details of the story seems to only find other copies of their story. The main part of this story that seems to have been distorted is that Marlon Baker is not a championship boxer. The owner of the boxing club referenced in Baker’s shirt doesn’t even believe Baker is a licensed, professional boxer at all. He’s just a guy who was wearing a shirt. And I get it. “Racist gets his ass kicked because he can’t leave racist enough alone” is a good story but “Racist gets his ass kicked because he’s too stupid to read that the guy he’s harassing is a championship boxer” is a better one. It’s just not true.

i love stories like these! about a decade ago, two men tried to mug a man in a mall with a knife. bad luck. the man was the 10th ranked light heavy weight boxer (175 pounds) in the world. at the barcelona olympics, a purse snatcher grabbed the bag off a man in line. the man just one the gold in the 200 meter sprint. thief did not get to far. finally, a decade or so ago, a mugger assaulted a little old lady in a park. he was caught very quickly by police and passersby. after she positively identified him, the police checked on hers. very bad news for the mugger. turns out he had just mugged the mother of the godfather of the lucchesi crime family. cops said that he had a very noticeable change in his attitude.
