  • Listen I'm for student debt reform and I think its gotten way out of hand and demands reform. BUT.. This is a terrible terrible way to make a point. What do the proportions does this represent in money value? I look at this graphic and all it suggests is that ok debt got bigger. As far as I know it went from $1 to $100 dollars. To illustrate my point: s-bullshit on the internet in 2001 S-bullshit on the internet in 2011 there's no fucking meaning here. If you're gonna make a point make it clearer otherwise its just a another misleading graphic.

  • I'm sure some bootstrappy libertarian will be along in a minute to remind us that the ballooning education debt is due solely to a lack of personal responsibility on the part of students. After all, it doesn't matter that tuition rates have skyrocketed compared to inflation over the past ten years. No, it's all the kids' fault! Every single one of them should've predicted the future and gone to a state school, since tuition totally hasn't gone up at those places. Who cares that people have relied on student loans for generations and lived decent lives? This is America! We don't consider past success when making reasoned decisions about the future. That would make sense! Besides, unless you major in engineering, IT, or air-conditioning repair, you deserve to be unemployed and indentured to Sallie-Mae for 75 years. Got a liberal arts degree? Please! Maybe your ability to engage in critical thinking would've been useful back in 1986 when employers still bothered to train their employees, but this is 2011. You need to go to trade school! But remember, you must be clairvoyant and know four years in advance whether your chosen trade will be outsourced to the Philippines before you graduate. Failing that, you'll just need to take a quasi-legal, unpaid internship for at least two years in order to gain experience. This will require you to “work hard”, i.e., have parents rich enough to subsidize your thralldom for two years. If that doesn't work, it can only mean you are lazy and stupid.

  • Quitcherbitchin. No one forced you to take out the loan. Not my fault you majored in Sanskrit or underwater basket weaving. I found something I enjoy and can make a living at. Booyah!

  • Lemme guess… the 2000 and 1990 circles are smaller because they've had 11 or 21 years to pay them off?   (i.e. the green circle represents the amount of debt that still exists from student loans taken out back in 1990)

  • How much of $45,000 of college debt be in 1990, can someone calculate that for me? I just would like to find out how much I would owe back if I went the college in the 90's…

  • Just curious, but how many more students are pursuing higher education now than twenty years ago? I imagine the number has increased, therefore, the amount of loans being taken out has, as well. Also, since the economy tanked and inflation has mounted, schools have been more conservative with scholarships, since they have to maintain their funds long term. This means more students have to foot more of their bills. All in all, this is taking the situation out of context of various contributing factors.

  • a bunch of circles, and todays circle is the biggest and red-est!
Are their any figures for this, are the numbers adjusted for inflation?

  • Here, buy this new textbook for $200. Don't worry though, we'll buy it back from you next semester for $5. Then we'll turn around and sell it used for $190.

  • Fuck! I think Obama should run on a “do-over” platform. National debt out of control. Student loan debt out of control. It's never getting paid back. Let's go Argentina on that ass and just say we ain't payin' and start over from zero. C'mon, gang. Who's in?
