The 12 Dumbest Ways New Yorkers Prepared For The Last Hurricane
Let’s remember how bad New Yorkers are at preparing for hurricanes with these pictures from Hurricane Irene. God bless us all.
1. With towels and masking tape.
2. Covering their cars in garbage bags.
3. Covering their cellar doors with garbage bags, tape, and bricks.
6. Covering their windows with cardboard.
7. Duct-taping their doors shut.
8. Cardboard “sandbags”
12. And last but not least, poorly taping their windows.
Which is a myth by the way. Tape doesn’t do anything!

kennyd7 5 months ago#1-2-8-11 are the only stupid or questionable attempts from what I see. Actually #11 is probably just someone’s idea of a joke
#3 Trying to seal an outside cellar door is not stupid, it just wasn’t done very well.
#4 Why is it stupid to not want a statue to be washed away or damaged, again it just wasn’t done very well
#5 & 7 Over kill, and also probably trying to minimize damage to windows
#6 #9 Questionable, but I don’t really think its a stupid action. Again probably trying to reduce damage
#10 Just overkill
#12 Not stupid, just not very well done. And it is NOT a myth that taping windows in a hurricane helps. The tape adds more structural integrity agains wind and helps reduce flying glass shards if it does break. Although the best thing to use is plywood of course, which probably was one of the first things out of stock everywhere. My first impression of this list is that Matt just needed something to post about so he threw something together in 10 min. Im sure there were a whole of really dumb pics he could have found but most of the pics here are not dumb, they just show examples of panicked or unskilled actions. -

D McK 6 months agoWell all of you genius southerners who have weathered so many hurricanes, how the hell does one board the windows of an apartment that are ceiling to floor and are about twenty stories up (give or take). Taping a window may not be the most ideal but seeing how we can’t exactly board up our windows outside, the choices are limited. So while we’re inside reading a book or catching up on past issues of the New Yorker, why don’t you do something low brow like deep-fry something, or kiss your cousin, or whatever you people do down south? We’ve gone through much worse than a hurricane—so you can laugh you morbidly obese self to the closest Wal-mart store, but we’ll be just fine because this is New York City bitches.

Actually, it would be more dangerous to tape up your windows. If the glass shatters, then taping them would cause the glass to break into large pieces. The larger pieces are much more dangerous than smaller bits if they are caught in the wind. By the way, here’s a suggestion: stop with the stereotyping. I could see the offense taken by this post, but you could take the high road. Fine, be an intellectual. Don’t forget to be a human as well.

So to all the back-woods geniuses who are calling us New Yorkers idiots for taping the windows, how the hell are we supposed to board up our windows when they’re ceiling-to-floor and around 20 stories high? You want to use your worldly knowledge about hurricane protection to explain that one? Taping glass might not be ideal but it’s better than nothings. so while we’re riding out the storm by doing something high-brow like reading a book or catching up on our our back-issues of the New Yorker, why don’t you to gnaw on some grit, kiss your cousin, or deep fry something you hillbillies!?!
