1. In 1972, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and NASA started a television network meant to be an “informative/instructional network focused on providing real education through the medium of TV.”
3. In 1980 the network was privatized and became “The Learning Channel.”

kevinnivek 7 months agoAlmost all the money that that extremely small percentage of our taxes goes to The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which in turn gives it to many different sources, which includes local public stations and networks, which then buys programming from NPR, PRI and PBS, among many other sources.

What if you’re too poor to afford cable? Do you want all those kids who are poor through no fault of their own to go without ANY educational programming? No Sesame Street for the young ones, or Nova for the older ones? When i was a kid, we didn’t have much money, and didn’t have cable (and yes, both of my parents worked their asses off), and i am so thankful that we had PBS in our lives. When did this country start not giving a shit for those less fortunate than us???

It seems all learning channels are doing this and shortly all of them with be like this but for now there are more learning channels then just tlc and history ch There are tons of them and natgeo is one of them

alexy 7 months agoI’m sure they switched their focus because they were making a ton of money and had no incentive to change. The fact is no one watched those shows just like no one watched music videos. People watch the shows they make now. It’s not their fault it’s the people who watch it.

Re President Bartlet’s call to save PBS, I remember Josh Lyman, the president’s deputy Chief of Staff railing against Sesame Street - a highly lucrative production of The Children’s Television Workshop - saying something to the effect that it was not suffiently paying its correct debt to its Publicly funded host broadcaster, and if my memory serves me, should contribute more cash to public broadcasting or move to a commercial network. I think it was in season 3 or 4 of The West Wing.
