I remember back in early ’90s TLC was still a pretty serious educational channel. Case in point: I’ll never forget stumbling upon a show about child-birth that was very serious and graphic, indeed. I was about 13-14 at the time and couldn’t believe what I was seeing—very educational, they showed everything!

Re President Bartlet’s call to save PBS, I remember Josh Lyman, the president’s deputy Chief of Staff railing against Sesame Street - a highly lucrative production of The Children’s Television Workshop - saying something to the effect that it was not suffiently paying its correct debt to its Publicly funded host broadcaster, and if my memory serves me, should contribute more cash to public broadcasting or move to a commercial network. I think it was in season 3 or 4 of The West Wing.

alexy 8 months agoI’m sure they switched their focus because they were making a ton of money and had no incentive to change. The fact is no one watched those shows just like no one watched music videos. People watch the shows they make now. It’s not their fault it’s the people who watch it.
