In 1875 North Carolina’s Constitution was amended to ban interracial marriage. That ban only ended in 1971.

      This law will affect heterosexual couples as well. Gay marriage was already illegal, but this amendment makes everyone second class citizens. I’m deeply saddened by it.

      Disappointed but not surprised. The gay culture here is so suppressed and you’re right, people probably didn’t realize what they were voting for. I just don’t get why this is even an issue in 2012. Get over yourself, self-righteous bigots.

      There’s no justifying this, or the 1875 ban, but this “backwoods”, “red state” and other divisive wording doesn’t help. California, a “progressive” blue state, passed a similar ban. If you want this sort of thing to stop, stop treating other people as inferior to you just because they disagree with you. There are positives and negatives to both conservative and liberal viewpoints, but when you polarize it into “us vs them” mindsets, you only help fuel things like this.

      What’s really frustrating is that the polling numbers show how confused and stupid the voters are. A majority favored equal marriage rights, but roughly the same number said they’d vote for the amendment. Reading comprehension and rational thought are clearly NC’s problem right now.

      Don’t worry…there is a large group of people trying to repeal this Amendment. Most of us are NOT the view that the media portrays. We’re educated, loving, openminded, and have had it up to HERE with the old, white, backwoods people that are still shaping the vote in this state.

      The 70’s weren’t that long ago… This whole gay marriage thing shouldn’t be that hard to assess. People have been gay since the beginning of time, deal with it.

      Jim Crow laws weren’t overturned in a day, or even a year. But eventually the citizens came to their senses and recognized the inherent rights of every individual, and corrected the systemic discrimination propitiated by the government and the people who elected their representatives and law-making officials. I can only hope this will be a wake-up call for a second (or third or fourth) civil rights movement that strives to empower each and every person with their inalienable rights. In the meantime, I will not be moving back to North Carolina, but I will retain my voting registration there in hopes that there is a ballot initiative this fall to overturn this discriminatory state constitutional amendment. Tonight the majority of the voting population chose to deny human beings the right to civil unions and domestic partnerships even though same-sex marriages were already banned by law in the state.  TL;DR, I know. I’m just really, really sad tonight. I’m a Tarheel born and a Tarheel bred, and when I die if Amendment 1 isn’t rescinded I won’t be a Tarheel dead because I’ll have washed my hands of the beautiful state I called “home” for 30 years.

      Unfortunately I don’t expect much forward thinking from a historically red state.  Someday I hope that we can look past petty things such as the definition of marriage and move onto issues that really matter and effect us as a whole. Who’s getting married to who is really none of my business and shouldn’t be the government’s either. (And I’m talking between consenting adults, not animals or children or what have you. I know how you smart alecs think) Meh. :(
