In Chicago, the city does not plow many of the streets and relies on people to shovel out the spaces. In exchange it is respected custom to respect their effort at civic snow removal by not taking their spot. Richard Epstein wrote a law review article about this custom.

I hate morons that park their giant SUVs or full-size sedans in the compact car parking.  I drive a car that has been door-dinged and bumped to hell parking on street/in garages; I have no problem dinging up cars that can’t read or park.

I actually think the two about owning a spot because you shoveled it out are complete bs. its a public roadway. you can’t save a spot. if you think that this is ok YOU are actually the asshole. I guess I can never live in Chi-town if that is the norm there because it would drive me insane.
