I don't see animals with homeless people too much here in Manhattan, but I saw 2 dogs with their homeless owner in Rome and it shattered my world. But people who were commenting about the dogs being taken good care of…so right. Their owners take great care of the dogs as best they can given the circumstances and if I saw this in NYC, I would definitely give them money for the bb dogs/cats and themselves.

If I saw that, I would go out and buy a bag of dogfood for the dog and give the guy extra. Because after all he is feeding 2 people. And I wouldn't be surprised if he gave the dog more.

There are lots of dogs who will be put to death because they have no one in the world willing to take them home and love them. As much as I want all dogs to have a proper home these animals are loved. And are companions. The alternative is death. The homeless with animals usually take very good care of them and the handouts seem to be bigger for the ones with animals. I always give a little more when I see an animal with a homeless person.

Welp, this just ruined my day. Time to send in all my earnings this summer so these dogs can start smiling.

In fact Matt, having looked at International Homeless Animals’ Day, you've kind of missed the point. The Day is about raising awareness and funds for animal shelters… for animals that don't have owners. You've posted a load of photos of animals whose owners happen to be homeless.

Having worked with the homeless in Bristol, England, I can assure you that most homeless people with pets take better care of their animals than they do themselves. These animals are often the only friend a homeless person will have, and most have a much better life than a family pet who is left alone at home for hours whilst its owners are out to work and then shipped off to kennels for weeks at a time when they want a holiday. Dogs are pack animals and like nothing better than to be with their owner 24/7. They also have fur and can cope with living rough much better than most humans can. If you really worry about them, buy them a sachet of dog food when you can, making sure you give their human something to eat too.

I can't tell they are homeless unless they have a homeless person with them in the picture. One dog has a sweater on, you know that dog is doing okay.

I was doing okay until I got to the pic of the dog wearing the HUNGRY sign. Now I'm sitting here, crying all over everything.

Someone call me a doctor, I need my broken heart mended, stat.
