I've read a few of these comments and some of their responses, and I feel like most of you are missing the real issue, like the cop seemed to, and like many of these people with signs seem to. One comment stated that people shouldn't have to compromise how they dress. In an ideal world, that would be true. But we humans are animals first, cognate second, unfortunately more often than not. I think it's also a rash generalization to say that libido never has anything to do with rape. While it's true that often times it's straight-up hate, is it really so hard to believe that someone with a strong libido, which has gone un-satisfied for a long enough time, coupled with the right kind of personality, could lead to rape? Rape is even common in the animal kingdom. To say it has nothing to do with our sexual nature is to deny the roots of that sexual nature. The only difference is that we have an epic capacity for memory and understanding, and the suffering increases. That said, to say that girls are asking for it is to give CREEDENCE to that animal instinct that any rational, compassionate human being will understand and be repulsed by. My favourite signs at this rally are actually the ones the men are holding that say, “real men don't rape”, and the like. The fact of the matter is, as women, your bodies are bordering on essential for the mating process, and the more revealing and accentuated you present yourself, the more willing you come across. This is NOT to be confused with blame. It's to be interpreted as a simple fact that, if you can get over the horror of people not always acting like you want them to, you can quickly learn to deal with. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with compromise in a situation. Modesty is not some horrible oppressive force, it's entirely reasonable given the way the human mind, especially the male mind, works. I'm not saying burkas for all, that's retarded. I'm saying instead of just thinking that something is fine and great and saying “I can do it because I want to and I don't care about what other people think”, it helps to actually think about something other than what you *think* you want. Like the way people react to given situations. And I say *think* you want, because I firmly believe a great many women who wear next to nothing when out on the town are really just starved for attention and think that that's the only way to get any, which is complete bullshit. Men like women with smarts. They like women who can say “Yeah I know about FDR, I know about the new deal, I'll give you a new deal…and then over the course of some years, she structures her sex acts in such a way that they save the economy…” (Eugene Mirman) I rant, and sometimes I feel like I don't get across what I'm trying to say. My point is this. Compromise is a part of life. Understanding the animalistic nature and the roots of mating rituals of humans is also an important part of life. Compassion is probably the MOST important part of life, but you can't expect it from anybody, and proudly showing off your body will not buy respect. Humans, for the most part, have become the types to mate with one person…at least those that understand the human condition. Treat yourself with respect and you won't have to demand it, it will just be given. Also, carry mace and a knife to cut off the balls of those kinds of people that don't understand their own sexual urges and can't control them, and those who are full of hate. Jesus. I'm so sorry for the length of that…kind of.
