Another slow day in Canada.

10, 20, 24, and 25 need to be seen by every person in the world. It’s not about sluts or clothing (or lack thereof), the problem is found in the offenders, most of which are, well, sorry excuses for men. Real men don’t rape. Let’s socialize our boys the right way, none of this gun-crazy, “Boys don’t cry,” “A Man is Not a Virgin” BS.

I find it extremely disturbing to read comments from people who are basically saying “Rape isn’t justifiable, but…”. Rape isn’t justifiable. PERIOD. People who use “slut” as a negative term towards women are afraid of the idea of a sexually promiscuous woman. They are afraid of women who have the courage and determination to satisfy their own sexual needs and desires on their own terms and with mutual consent. Why is it so difficult for people to accept the idea that you can have many sexual partners and still be safe, sane and consensual about it?  The real issue here is about power and control. Rape is about using sex as a medium to inflict power and control over another person. Using “slut” as a derogatory term speaks to one’s fear of a woman taking control and having power over her own sexuality. I’m also surprised that no one has addressed the double-standard of when men are considered to be sexually promiscuous. Society still openly celebrates and encourages that kind of behavior among men, because society is perfectly fine with the image of a man being in control and having power over his sexuality. You can’t even call a man a slut and expect the majority of people to see that as a negative. This attitude also causes major problems in cases when a woman rapes a man (which is a very real scenario). If you tolerate violence of any kind, in any situation (including the “murder in dangerous neighborhoods” scenario multiple people have brought up), YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM. All change in the world starts on an individual level - THAT MEANS YOU. Nobody, consciously or unconsciously, invites any kind of violence upon themselves - and to assume otherwise is criminal.

To those suggesting that “slutty” clothes make a target of yourself:
Yes, it does. I can dress as slutty as I want, and, yes, it may be done to attract potential partners. BUT.
I still retain the right to turn down advances and I should be able to expect any who are turned away to respect my decision and not become violent. It is understandable to say that dressing provocatively is just that: provocative.
It is never excusable to say that it ever invites rape.

NOTHING can excuse rape. Nothing can divert even the smallest amount of responsibility for rape from a rapist. Nothing can explain, contextualize, or reduce rape. So why am I reading explanations, contextualizations, and reductions? There is consent, and there is rape, and there is no gray area. And people who think there is a gray area are—legally speaking—potential rapists. I’m sure those of you who think you see a gray area won’t like that—but since you are only ever one “mistake” away from raping someone, I don’t worry much about what you think. Since you are the jurors who acquit rapists when you see them make a “mistake,” I don’t care what you think. Since you are the excuse-makers who convince prosecutors to drop rape cases because convictions are unlikely, I don’t care what you think. Nevertheless, I don’t blame you gray-area folks for rapes you haven’t committed yet—after all, I have no idea what you are wearing.

I think, to some degree, advising women to dress less provocatively is like telling someone to avoid a bad neighborhood. Sure, getting shot in that neighborhood is in no way your fault, but it’s simply not wise to take a stroll through a statistically high-crime neighborhood. Similarly, the blame for rape should never be placed on a woman. However, I would say it’s wise to advise women to not dress in ways that make it easy for men to picture them a sexual sort of way. You might argue that rapists have deep psychological problems that are more complicated than just an urge for sex, but I think a good portion of them (especially the younger ones, i.e. high-school or college age) are just desperate for sex. And they see “slutty” girls as providing a much easier opportunity to satisfy that need. But again, I disagree with the claim that the responsibility to avoid rape lies in the woman’s hands. It’s always the rapist’s fault. I’m just saying that conservative clothing is, perhaps in a minority of cases, less likely to “provoke” rape, as much as that can happen. But if freedom of expression is more important to women (and I’m not saying it shouldn’t), then it is their choice to make. I’d really like to see some sort of study questioning rapists about the basis on which they chose their victim. I’m sure it must have something to do with appearance.

This is pretty silly in my opinion. Yes the cop could have used better rhetoric to get his point across which was don’t put yourself in jacked up situations. It’s a sad fact of the world we live in that these things exist so why increase the chances of them happening to you? You wouldn’t roll into a Favela at 2a.m with a Mr. T starter kit on now would you? And if you did and got robbed wouldn’t people be like C’MON MAN!

This event wasn’t about being slutty and proud, although some people might have taken it that way. It was because a police officer said something like, if you don’t want to be raped, don’t dress like sluts.  And Dressing sexy shouldn’t be an invitation to be raped. Apparently the police dismiss allot of rape cases saying the girl was a slut, or was just making up the rape story. I think it might just be lazy policing. Anyway, I’m happy to see they used some of my photos from the event.  Ben,
