Brandon , Mississippi has for decades been a hotbed of Klu Klux Klan activities … isn’t it ironic that a handful wackie Baptist are now being attacked in methods similar to historic intimidation once done to Blacks, Jews, Gays, etc?  Westboro tactically uses old women & children to “protest”. They want you to hate them, they want you to take violent lawbreaking action against them … they feed on your HATE.
Shun Westboro while you honor our fallen veterans. Turn your back on Westboros’ message —- non-violence will defeat them, and in ignoring them they will fade away.

All of you condoning this need to think carefully about your ends-justifies-the-means approach and what it means to live in a country with free speech. Oh, and go fu*k yourselves, too.

I have a friend who was a Patriot Guard, who would go to all of these funerals, keeping the Westboro people at bay. I know he would approve 10 million times of this as I do. God Bless you, John Ruff, WHS, Class of ‘77. RIP. :’)

It’s amazing how there can be such large douche bags in this country that will protest a funeral of one of those that assure them the right to protest and believe whatever asinine thing they wish. I heard something a while back where the WBC had to work their way through a local POW-MIA biker gang if they wish to protest a funeral but after noticing how many of them were holding baseball bats and crowbars they decided to turn around and drive off in their church vans. And a few counties away they were going to protest a funeral. They first stopped at Wal-Mart to get a few supplies. When they got back to the parking lot they found someone slashed all their tires. Sadly, they weren’t able to make it to the funeral that day. :-) I’m one who believes unpopular speech should be protected. I’m also one who believes that unpopular speech shouldn’t be made easy to express. That’s how the battle of ideas work and I think we all know which ideas will win in this battle.

As I read more into this story, I’m starting to believe that it was be just a rumor. There’s another one where they got arrested outside a Taco Bell but could not be questioned due to most of the officers performing the funeral detail. Whatever the truth is, a soldier lost his life. And that’s it. We shouldn’t have to mention people who protest them. That’s what they want. The fuel to their fire. Let them chant all they want; but it should not deter anymore from remembering the fallen. They’re just very cruel trolls.

Who cares how they stopped them? You are missing the point. They were stopped and a brave marine was laid to rest without his family enduring more pain than necessary. Yeah a man was beat for his beliefs, what ever! He went there to shove his beliefs down other peoples throats. He and his hate mongers were there to cause pain and make this brave Marines death in vain. So please seriously think about this.. Are you seriously questioning how this was handled? How would you feel if it were you laying someone to rest and they were there taunting and mocking you and your recently departed loved one? I bet you wouldn’t have any issues with something like this happening then.

The WBC does have a legal right to say what they want and I think the Constitution supports that.  But there are also real world implications to this kind of speech. A KKK member has the perfect right to spout his views at Howard University but he is probably going to get his a** kicked. Talk s**t, get hit. That’s just life.

I disagree with the beliefs of the WBC and how Rankin County handled this. A man was beaten (for speaking his mind); county resources were used to stop them from assembling (a First Amendment violation); and the few that made it were taken away for “questioning”? I’m for banning the WBC at funerals (which should be private, but the US Supreme Court failed us on that recently). Unfortunately, they are protected by that 200-plus year-old document.

The fact that the WBC is almost universally reviled makes this post easy to like. I love seeing those hatemongers thwarted. The tactics used, however, make me uneasy. Basically a man was beaten because of his ideas, and local law enforcement abused their powers to prevent the exercise of (admittedly vile) free speech. Blocking in the WBC vehicles with county pickups is cute and all, but to go as far as to knowingly illegally detain them is not something I can get behind. There is a significant portion of American society that would applaud tactics such as these if used to stop pro-gay demonstrations. We should be very cautious to cheer abuses of power such as these (and they are abuses), lest we find ourselves inside a holding cell somewhere simply because we chose to speak out on a cause we thought just.

As someone who has been through something similar as a widow, I can tell you that a site like this was the most moving moment of my life. Good For Rankin County!
