REMEMBER: Organized voter fraud DOESN'T EXIST. There are NO SUCH CASES a proponent of these laws can cite. Not one. So what do you think the Republicans' REAL reason for imposing voting barriers (like ID fees and travel time) on students and the poor might be? Republicans have a documented history of voter supression that should worry anyone who favors free and fair elections. It depresses me that so many people don't recognize this transparent disenfranchisement for what it is.

Bad for students and minorities because statistically those groups are less likely to have drivers licenses for the state in which they're living, either because they don't drive or they're studying/living in a state from which they don't originate. This is also a problem for those living in the inner city, who may rely on public transportation and therefore have little or no use for a drivers license. Students, minorities, and those living in the inner cities, btw, are Democratic voting blocs. These laws are presented by Republicans. It's not a huge leap to say this is unfair.

If you simply cannot stand having an ID for the state you live in, but are registered to vote elsewhere, why wouldn't you request an absentee ballot be sent to your current residence? If you aren't responsible enough to have/get an ID (or you aren't a citizen, as many study abroad students also live in collegiate areas) then you aren't responsible enough to vote.

like its been said previously, Why is it a problem to show an ID if you have one? Having an ID is not an obstacle as I see it. I will also go along with “stupidFlanders” below in that this graphic shows me nothing really.

Nice try to rile up the lemmings over a rule-of-law issue that keeps elections from going dirty. Really, I mean it—A for effort. Everyone knows the real reason why leftist politicos are upset about requiring IDs is that it makes it harder for them to steal elections with ineligible, foreign, and double tapping voters.

Without a legitimate photo ID, anyone can go vote in your behalf without your consent. A non-government issued ID can be easily counterfeited. Why is this even an issue?

This really doesn't change anything for me. I need a driver's license to get a student ID and I need it to get my textbooks on my student account.  People can make mistakes and lose it (like I have) but, you need it for everything else.If you lose it, buy a replacement. I can't drive without it. Why should this be any different? Just another thing to add to the list of “Things I Need My Driver's License For”

There's nothing unreasonable here, everyone should have some form of state issued ID. The extent you guys go to in order to constantly demonize Republicans is a little ridiculous.

The DMV: It's Not Just For Driver's Licenses and Never Was! Getting a state issued ID card isn't rocket science. I work in a place that deals a lot with the working class, the poor and the homeless, and very very many of the have state issued IDs. I bet students could do it too, with some effort and a little luck!

A little context:  It is the Republican party that is creating and passing these bills. The stated purpose is to avoid voter fraud, which is a non-existent problem. These laws make it much harder not only for students, but also for non-drivers (who tend to be minorities) to vote. Republicans putting up barriers to youth and minority voting blocs is neither justified nor coincidental.

I must be missing something here. A law preventing a foreign student from voting, or requiring ID to vote is “bad?”

I think the reason it is difficult to have an ID on person for some students, is that some study in other states. They are then unable to show ID and vote if they aren't in the state!
