George Washington Vandalized A Bridge

1. This is the Natural Bridge. You can find it in Natural Bridge, Virginia.

Natural Bridge was formed when a cavern collapsed.

2. It costs $19 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to see.

Legend has it…

In 1750, a young George Washington surveyed the Natural Bridge site for Lord Fairfax. He carved his initials 20 feet up the wall where it remains today.

5. Right here:

That’s 20 feet up.

The signature above George Washington’s is that of a James Madison student who managed to carve his name above GW.

7. And one more random fact about Natural Bridge.

In 1774, Thomas Jefferson purchased 157 acres of land including the Natural Bridge from King George III of England for 20 shillings (About $2 back then). It has remained privately owned since.

FYI, we’re on a road trip to Bonnaroo. See all the stuff we’ve stopped at a long the way here!
