The Bloomberg Administration has relented and postponed the marathon. The NYC Marathon starts in Staten Island just before the Verrazano Bridge.   You have a point. But, as @David Tuchman pointed out, it isn’t an apt comparison. The marathon paralyzes the city. So what were to happen if you paralyze an already paralyzed metropolis?

  Because those events are confined to self-contained locations that run pretty much autonomously and the New York City Marathon ties up a whole bunch of already limited resources (e.g. roads, river crossings, police officers, medical personnel, mobile generators) that could be put to better use in the relief effort. You have a point, but I don’t think you can really make a direct comparison.
