Somebody mentioned Jef Aerosol. Personally, I wouldn’t mention both of them in the same breath, but here goes:
As far as I can see, all Jef Aerosol does is reproduce already iconic images using a stencil technique. Jef Aerosol is all tecnique with no message. Banksy *creates* iconic images with a message. Big difference between the two. Banksy is not only one of the best graffiti artists of all time, he’s one of the few grafitti artist worth paying attention to, period. His is not self promoting squiggles and making once pleasant landscapes ugly. Banksy places poignancy amonst the ugliness. He’s actually one of the few artists worth paying attention to. When was the last time something in the Louvre had something relevant to say?

I think #40 IS a Banksy: It’s Banksy’s signature rat, is it not? It also popped up in the same week that “Exit Through The Gift Shop” opened, which also overlaps when all of Banksy’s other pieces appeared.

#16 is made all the better because the line the cop is sniffing is something ten miles long, and is one long dribble of white paint that runs along both sides of the Thames and over Westminster Bridge, if I recall correctly.
