Another thought that's probably too deep to post here, but responses are welcome… Images like those in this video move me as they move lots of other folks. But they also bring to mind a question I've never been able to make any headway answering: What is it about humanity that makes it possible for us to see such things, and to feel and know such things, and yet to turn away from such profound beauty and mystery to focus on the trivial, the banal, and the darkest corners of our nature? I've spent years studying World War II, and how we form and transmit our cultural understanding of what the war was, what it meant, and what it means. War is arguably one of the very few activities undertaken by humans in which every aspect of human nature is on display—from the absolute best and most heroic, to the most mundane, to the most vile and evil, it's all there, and often in the same instant. And yet the vast scope and profundity of something like war still manages to appear ludicrously simple and pointless when compared to the notion that we can look up, just as our ancestors have for tens of thousands of years, and see an expanse of time and space so huge and sweeping that the only response we can muster is awe. So how is it that it's possible for us to see something like this and then, five minutes later, to be completely consumed with deciding what to eat for supper or what to wear tomorrow? How is it possible to look up on the night of a full moon, and contemplate the fact that there are human footprints on its surface, then just as quickly to return to a preoccupation with the latest political scandal? In short, why isn't the immense mystery and vast beauty of the universe we inhabit enough for us? Perhaps the question is naive, but I can't help but wonder; it seems such a sad thing that it is not in our nature to enjoy and be content with the opportunities and the beauties with which the natural universe and nature itself surrounds us.

I could watch a whole hour of this… Seriously, there needs to be more.
