12 Depressing Photos From ‘We Are The 99 Percent’

Created by Occupy Wall Street protesters, We Are The 99 Percent is a Tumblr with less ranting and raving against the Wall Street system, and more just people with homemade signs telling their personal stories.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

Several posters have brought up this issue that people seem to think a degree will guarantee them a job. That has never been the case. It used to make your chances of getting higher level jobs much more likely, but with the lack of jobs and with many more people attending college than in previous generations, it’s no wonder that a degree means much less than it used to, forgetting that it’s not even about getting a degree, but also from which school you received it. It has lost a lot of its competitive edge in becoming more commonplace - this should not surprise anyone.
Additionally, it used to be that you could pay off your student loans easily enough once you got a job, so the loans weren’t really a problem until there were no jobs to pay them off. But an institution of learning should never have to guarantee a job, only an education. (Unless we’re talking about the nepotism benefits of some schools.)
That’s the problem of the marketplace and the wider corruption to which this movement should speak.

I find it difficult to find sympathy for the “student loan” crowd. Medical issues or unemployment I can understand… but debt that you consciously chose for yourself? What did you think was going to happen?

I’d encourage the people sharing their stories to view how they might be perceived by those they are fighting against. For instance, a piece of paper that says you have a masters doesn’t mean anything more than you found the financial resources to earn a degree and did your homework to receive the certificate. The degree means nothing. Your brain means something. Show people you are smart.  Telling someone you had a job for a really long time (and got laid off) or that you went to college (and racked up tons of debt) or that your can’t afford insurance (and you’ve become sick) makes it appear you are trying to earn pity. But doesn’t tell me what you’ve done with your degree. Or what talents you have that made your former employer keep you on as long as they did. Or why you are in poor health. I really hate to see so many people in this mess. The way out is to communicate well, show and use your skills, work very hard, be persistent, be nice. And finally, if you are protesting on Wall Street, dress nicely and professionally. The medium is part of the message.

When you have kids, or one of your family members is dying of cancer or another illness, and doctors refusing to treat them because you can’t afford the meds, then, you will think differently. This is NOT about YOU! This is about the rest less fortunate than you! This is worldwide! This is for those without a roof over their heads, the ill, the poor, the hungry, IT ISN’T ALWAYS ABOUT YOU YOU YOU!!!!

    • Hi…I’m a 24 year old recent graduate from college. I have $8,000 in loans and I have a job that doesn’t put a huge dent in my monthly payments. My family is not wealthy. I am a part of the 99%. HOWEVER…no one FORCED ME TO GO TO COLLEGE. I knew exactly what I’d owe when I came out of school. There are better jobs out there. I am looking for one. The government can’t take that blame. I MADE THE CHOICE. This is why I am not on board Occupy Wall Street. My generation needs to start taking THEIR LIVES INTO THEIR OWN HANDS. The government is just as corrupt as Wall Street. This movement is sad.
