January: Salt Bae

At the start of the year, Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe aka Salt Bae took over the internet for his extra-ass style of salting meats. His art of doing the absolute most had everyone meme-ing him for the month of January and beyond.

February: White Guy Blinking

Giant Bomb video producer Drew Scanlon's "blinking" face rose to its peak in February despite the original footage being released in 2013. Even though the insulted/confused reactionary gif was popular in the early months of 2017, it was still a heavily used meme throughout the year.

March: Meryl Streep Yelling

Even though this photo of Meryl Streep shouting something is from the 2015 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, it wasn't until March this year that it surfaced as a meme. And thank God, because it honestly fits perfectly with EVERY single song. I'm serious.

April: Playlist For My Crush

This meme came from a teen's playlist, made to send a message to someone she was dating... but not quite really feeling. While creative, people had mixed feelings about it all. But, of course that didn't stop them from hijacking the format and making it April's most popular meme.

May: Mocking SpongeBob

This meme hit its peak in May and, unsurprisingly, isn't dead yet. The image of SpongeBob is used to pretty much mock whatever someone says and is simple, but oh so effective. Its origin? A SpongeBob SquarePants episode from 2012 where SpongeBob acts like a chicken whenever he sees plaid. I know, I know.

June: The Floor is Lava

Everyone remembers playing "the floor is lava" when they were a child. You know, that game where your ultimate goal was to not touch the floor? Well, that's pretty much what this meme is: A whole bunch of scenarios where you'd want to and not want to touch the floor. Yeah, June was great.

This meme was honestly just... so stupid but so good. It was pretty much just the dancing hotdog in different scenarios or somehow merged with every other meme out there. Meme-ception, basically.

August: Distracted Boyfriend

What's funnier than a good stock image photo? If you answered "probably fucking nothing, aye", you're correct! The simplicity of this photo of a man, looking at another woman, while with his girlfriend, is what made it the meme of August.

Comedian Michael Dapaah, otherwise known as the one and only Big Shaq, was the reason for the iconic tune "Man's Not Hot". While the entire song is flames and mad quotable, it's the gun sound effects that drew everyone to this meme. Beyond the meme and bigger than September, the studio version of this banger is STILL played in the clubs and that's pretty damn impressive.

First of all, this one is pretty self-explanatory. The whole premise of this meme is a sentence of a conversation paired with a contrasting rebuttal. Simple? Sure. One of the best memes of 2017? Absolutely.

November: No Nut November

Look, November was pretty lacking in the fresh meme department BUT No Nut November (NNN) is the front-runner. The NNN meme was the running joke that the less men ejaculated in November, the more intellectual and powerful they became. Heh. Came.

December: Bitcoin and "If You Play This On New Year's Eve"

December was a pretty even split between bitcoin and NYE songs. The bitcoin memes dominated December because of the drastic rise in its price, and well... the collective view that people who own bitcoin think they're superior to the rest.

The NYE song meme came from a tweet about playing Frank Ocean's "Nights" so the song transition matched the change in year, and from there it pretty much just snowballed into what it is now.
