Response to The 19 Best Moments Of Lady Gaga Hosting "SNL":
There were funny moments. Gaga was incredibly generous, a good sport, in making fun of herself for SNL. Self-deprecating humor at its best. But the episode—if you watched it live—ran long with too many commercial breaks. Taran Killam and Vanessa Bayer were in far too many skits; Kenan also, but that’s true of almost every episode of the season so far. The monologue was fine: it was a good choice to have Gaga singing instead of acting. I questioned the back-up dancers, felt like they straddled the line between tribute to past era of musical performance and recapitulation of stereotypes. But the musical performances were a bit weak; a few times I could see her mouth not synced up with the song, and it makes me wonder if she were lip syncing. Kate McKinnon was a show-stealer again for me as the deranged co-op board woman with the plant baby. I’m really loving her performance on SNL; it won’t be long until she’s recognized as the genius performer she is.
