University of Michigan Wolverines and The Ohio State University Buckeyes are sports rivals dating back to early 20th century. The two states are neighbors and actually share a lot in common — Midwestern states with major urban centers decaying after several decades of diminishing manufacturing jobs. College sports, especially American Football, remain the one area of pride for both states, as they often are nationally competitive. Just hearing that a candidate is a Wolverine fan may be enough to sway some Ohio voters. It’s not a friendly rivalry by any means so a lot of people there take this sort of thing seriously.
