I think the problem is that the wood doesn't get enough momentum. Next time he should get a friend to hit him with it or, preferably, attach it to the bottom of a safe, piano, or anvil, and have someone drop it on him.

It took him 19 tries, not bad compared to Thomas Edison inventing the lightbulb. Of course, there are are better ways to cut wood, but this gentleman found a great way NOT to cut wood painlessly.
