Television’s 20 Most Powerful Live Moments
A new study by Nielson and Sony Electronics has compiled a list of the 20 most powerful moments in the history of television. Where where you when you watched these moments unfold live?
“To measure impact, Nielsen and Sony created a score for each event derived by the number of people who viewed the event live, the number who could recall details about where they were during the occurrence and the number who could remember discussing what happened with others. Those parameters may explain why the surreal, slow-speed chase of Simpson’s white Ford Bronco on June 17, 1994, ranked higher on the list than the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the Columbine High School shootings and the 2010 BP oil spill.”

c0ffee 10 months agoThis should be retitled : American Television’s 20 Most Powerful Live Moments. Apart from the 2 english royal subjects (you guys eat that stuff up) & the Japanese tsunami (and natural disasters) they are all American moments. I’m counting Saddam sentence as an American moment, it was your war after all. But maybe I’m nitpicking.

Things a T-Rex does 10 months ago“The coronation of the Queen was the first ever to be televised and was also the world’s first major international event to be broadcast on television” The defining moment of live TV was the Queen’s coronation. Ask anyone over 70 or so (certainly in UK) if they remember the first live broadcast they remember seeing on TV? Hell ask them why their family even bought their first TV? Did anyone go out and buy a TV so they could watch OJ? But a fun list and some good debate.

Godfather02 10 months agoSome of the events listed in the comment section should have definitely been on this list. Throwing out a couple more, Baby Jessica, Waco, the Tsunami, and the Munich Massacre. Definitely should be ranked higher than the royal wedding and Whitney Houston’s death at the least.

dangerouslytalented 10 months agoCasey Anthony and Whitney Houston should not be in that list at all above the Mumbai and London attacks, and the assassination of Oswald, which was a huge moment of live TV, actual breaking news, actually happening in front of the camera, (but this could have been included in the JFK assassination). This is more of a snapshot of what Americans in 2012 think is important. Gore’s concession speech was not as important as the backdoor shenenegans that got Bush into office (particularly the Brooks Brothers Riot and the faulty machines in Florida and the supreme court stopping the recount), and WHY WAS THERE NO MOON LANDING, that was the defining news story of the entire 20th century, along with Watergate and Nixon’s resignation.

bighungrysteve 10 months agoI was kind of expecting number 1 to be number 1 from the get-go. In the UK it was all going still by the time I got home from high school, and we watched it in silence on the TV. Repeated viewings have kind of dulled that initial shock, but there is still something visceral about it.
