Scott Weiland, Former Singer Of Stone Temple Pilots, Dies At 48

The rocker — who previously struggled with substance abuse — has died.

Scott Weiland, the former singer of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, has died at age 48.

He died in his sleep while on a tourbus in Bloomington, Minnesota, according to a statement released by his representatives on Facebook and Instagram.

Weiland was the frontman for the Grammy-award winning rock band Stone Temple Pilots that formed in 1986. The band rose to prominence in the '90s for such hits as "Plush," "Interstate Love Song," "Creep," and "Vasoline."

He was scheduled to perform with his latest group, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts, in Medina, Minnesota.

Police in Minnesota have said they found cocaine in the bedroom of the tourbus where Weiland's body was discovered, reports the Associated Press, although an official cause of death has not been announced. Cocaine was found elsewhere on the tourbus and a man traveling with Weiland was detained for questioning.

In the 2000s, Weiland formed the supergroup Velvet Revolver with guitarist Dave Kushner, and former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum.

He also released four solo albums, including Blaster, with his new band Wildabouts.

Weiland had a long and well publicized battle with drug addiction. He was arrested multiple times, spent several months in jail, and as many months in rehab. Weiland's very public substance abuse problems led to friction within the Stone Temple Pilots and he was "officially terminated" from the band 2013, reports Rolling Stone.

He discussed his struggles with heroin in his memoir Not Dead & Not For Sale.

"The opiate took me to where I'd always dreamed of going," he wrote about the first time he tried heroin. "I can't name the place, but I can say that I was undisturbed and unafraid, a free-floating man in a space without demons and doubts."

Weiland is survived by two children Noah and Lucy, who he had with his second wife Mary Forsberg.

A representative for Weiland could not immediately be reached by BuzzFeed News.

His former bandmates in Stone Temple Pilots responded to news of his death with an open letter to Weiland, writing, "You were gifted beyond words, Scott. Part of that gift was part of your curse."

The full letter:

Dear Scott,

Let us start by saying thank you for sharing your life with us.

Together we crafted a legacy of music that has given so many people happiness and great memories.

The memories are many, and they run deep for us.

We know amidst the good and the bad you struggled, time and time again.

It's what made you who you were.

You were gifted beyond words, Scott.

Part of that gift was part of your curse.

With deep sorrow for you and your family, we are saddened to see you go.

All of our love and respect.

We will miss you brother,
Robert, Eric, Dean

Dave Navarro, the guitarist of Jane's Addiction, tweeted that he had just learned his friend had died and was "so gutted."

Navarro later deleted his original tweet and posted another "to send thoughts toward the family!"

Its not my loss, its our loss. Send your thoughts toward the family! https://t.co/Ojv1QYABmg

His former Velvet Revolver band member Kushner tweeted:

Listen to Weiland perform an acoustic version of "Plush."
