He should have taken off 1/16th if he were that stuck on being precise.  regardless…taking off 1/20th of a percentile is laughable…it makes 0 difference in the final grade…

Why would anyone be outraged at this? There are so many reasons for it, my goodness… Just meet the standard, ‘tisn’t that difficult.

Do you want to work in an office building where the engineer “kinda” got the design right? Do you want to be operated on by a surgeon who “kinda” did it right? Do you want a prescription filled by a pharmacist who “kinda” got it right? I know this isn’t exactly the same magnitude (and lord knows no one is perfect), but don’t blame the professor if the rules aren’t followed. Same can be said for building codes, rules of ethics and laws of physics.

I think he was making a comment that 1” was much too large of a margin, and the student was trying to squeeze an extra page out of playing with spacing. Students forget that teachers were students once too, and they know ALL of the tricks. Just because you get away with it doesn’t mean the prof didn’t know about it.

science is and must be precise! If you can’t follow procedures, find another field…

I disagree with the consensus here. I don’t think it’s a question of the margin not being 1” exactly. The more plausible explanation is that he requested 1/2” margin (for instance) and since the guy used 1” margin, he got dinged.

I think the world should get in line with Burma and America and ditch the metric system. Percentages are too hard.

it probably got the kid two extra lines. should’ve just spent time writing more of the essay than figuring out that 1/20th of an inch gives him that much more.
