      I have a friend whose niece who got hurt sledding down a hill at the age of nine. A head injury. Two years later she is still having trouble focusing, doing simple things like tell time & fighting awful headaches daily. None of this would ha e happened of she wore a helmet. That reporter is far from a killjoy. She is song her job

      I have a unique perspective. When my niece was nine she was severely injured in a sledding accident when she and another sledder crashed into each other at the bottom of the hill, hitting their heads together. As well as a skull fracture, she received an Epidural Hematoma (the same injury that killed Natasha Richardson) which is a mass of blood pooling inside the skull and putting pressure on the brain. Thankfully, due to her very observant grandparents, she was taken to the hospital in time where the surgeon had to open her cranium and remove a blood clot the size of a softball. She was extremely lucky, and now is a happy and healthy 15 year old. The CT scans the doctor showed us of her brain before and after the surgery were enough to make any parent put their child in complete body armor or ban sledding altogether. Reminding people to be safe and wear a helmet while sledding down a city street isn’t a kill-joy, it’s being responsible.

      I live in Seattle and I have seen scores of people with their kids and dogs just walking across, in the middle of, cross country skiing down, and sledding in the streets. The problem is that these people seem to think that the snow entitles them to this behavior without having to be cautious of vehicles. I didn’t grow up here so I’m not afraid to drive in the snow. Unfortunately I’m afraid I’m going to commit manslaughter because of the people just darting into and across streets assuming there’s no cars. In two days I’ve seen way too many close calls so I don’t know why this reporter should get harassed by this dumb woman.

      Sledding is no different from any other snow sport except that you have less control than you would on a pair of skis or a snowboard. Why shouldn’t you wear a helmet and padding? Besides, the reporter was sent there.. To do the job she was contracted to do… She didn’t take the whole crew out there on her own free will. Geez.

      I used to live in Belltown (downtown Seattle.) It’s a long standing tradition to sled down the streets when the city has been shut down by snow. One of the best/ most fun ways to pass the time and really brings out a warm sense of community! Most of the time people are sledding on trashcan lids and makeshift items; since it hardly snow there and people don’t tend to have sleds.The news reporter was just being a sourpuss and ruined the fun.
