Buying a Laptop Is Like, Hard

Web design is getting better and better all the time. Unless you’re trying to buy a laptop online. It’s a sweaty, sheet-grossing nightmare, just like it was 10 years ago. Welcome to where web designers go to die.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

Here’s what you see when you try to build a laptop from most of the major PC makers. Ugly. And the latter three—HP, Dell, and Lenovo—just hide their complexity, taking you through a long series of menus instead of putting it all up front.

Contra: iPad 2

But here’s what it’s like to buy an iPad 2. Huh.

Sooo… let me get this straight… You’re comparing customizing computing tools appropriate to the work task to buying a non-customizable one-size-fits-all media consumption toy? Huh. In your case, since you just email, blog and view porn, you can skip right to the “Add to Cart” or “Review and Purchase” tab with the base model. Oh wait, you clearly didn’t see the big tab/button, and thus fail at reading comprehension.  Perhaps you should buy yourself a typewriter if figuring out the CPU-memory-hard drive combination is, like, too hard.

So what you’re asking for is fewer options to customize when you click the customize button? Here’s a pro-tip - if you don’t know how to customize a laptop, just click the ‘buy now’ button. I’d bet a nickel that everyone of those sites had a ‘buy now’-esque button right the next to the ‘customize’ button you clicked on.

Seems pretty straight-forward to me. To add to what atillman2 said, if this is confusing at all to you, you shouldn’t be making a custom laptop. Or probably using one either. Go buy a Apple laptop, they’re made for people who don’t understand computers.

    • The Air kind of iPad-ifies the Mac line from this perspective. There’s only one config option on the Air—memory—the rest are all add-ons.  If they were smart they’d present the config options like the iPad and then present you with all the add-ons after you’ve added it to your cart. But they’d probably sell fewer Applecare subscriptions and superdrives that way.
