I can't watch Glenn Beck without thinking of Psalm 1:1-2, which reads “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, NOR SITS IN THE SEAT OF MOCKERS; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” And what IS the “law of the Lord,” you may ask? Well, let's ask Jesus, who according to Mark 12:28-30 answered the question “Which commandment is the most important of all?” By proclaiming that “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” As for the theory that “Mr.” Beck is in fact criticizing not volunteerism (which he readily reminds us “is working for FREE” God forbid, see Matthew 5:41 for the origin of the phrase “going the extra mile”) but rather statism, I would ask, what's wrong with a little social cohesion? Those of you who see America slipping away and long for the “good old days” when supposed Hollywood liberals never rallied to support a government initiative for the common good, please see Victory Gardens and War Bonds.
