Mark/Wilkie: You are a total moron. I began smoking tobacco cigarettes during my early teens and continued for some 28 years - approx 16mos during which I was pregnant & nursing 2 children. I returned to smoking later. Contrary to popular belief, one can smoke while nursing as long as you don't smoke @ least 2hrs before nursing… E-cigs (Janty Dura-C, Janty Stick, 901, & KR808D-1) have kept me off tobacco cigarettes aka analogs since July 7th, 2009. Since I have lupus (SLE), Sjogren's disease, & a retinal eye disease, my smoking presented problems; hwr, I wasn't about to give up something I enjoyed. I'd already lost my drivers license to blindness as well as a great career; I lost another great career as a result of severe pain & constant illness from lupus (SLE) & Sjogren's disease by way of inoperable nerve damage of the ulnar nerve in my right arm. Even now that I am a freelance writer, I can only write when I'm feeling well, which isn't as often as I would like so ultimately, I lost much of my life including the independence of climbing behind the wheel of my truck or on my motorcycle to clear my head when I needed some downtime on a bad day. Despite the sniping by DH, I absolutely, positively, under-no-circumstances was giving up my nicotine. The e-cigarettes allowed me to keep smoking without all the crap that come with it. My own series of doctors whom I must see every 30 days for lupus/Sjogren's checkups could not believe the fact I no longer had the smoker's cough just 30 days after giving up tobacco cigarettes. He even went so far as to tell me how much he wished ALL his smoking patients would switch to e-cigarettes. Your body gets the nicotine but w/o the cancer-causing carcinogens. On July 7th, 2010, it will be one full year since I gave up tobacco cigarettes. And, while I don't feel great all the time because of my health in general, I can tell you from PERSONAL experience that I do feel 1000% better than I did in the months leading up to July 7, 2009! I even managed to lower my initial nicotine need levels (36mg of nicotine to 18mg-24mg of nicotine). I can't tell you if I will eventually give up the e-cigarettes or not but I can say that as long as I want to smoke/vape e-cigarettes, no moron like you is going to tell or convince me otherwise. You need to wake the “F” up & get your facts straight. E-cigarettes do NOT contain the cancer-causing carcinogens found within regular tobacco; however, either way, adults can drink, smoke tobacco, drive cars, have sex, go out to clubs, and just about anything else we want to do. There will come a time when that won't be so but until that time, I say live life to the fullest because one day there will be no tomorrows and if an e-cigarette gets you through the day then go for it!

I am a e-cigarette smoker now and after seventeen years of smoking AT LEAST a pack per day of Newports I can honestly say I feel better, more accepted by non-smokers, smarter!, and will never touch a real cigarette again. They are a very viable and ECONOMICAL solution/alternative to smoking.

“Dumb Head”… you're an idiot. You don't have any valid reason to call smoking e-cigarettes “inane and stupid”. My boyfriend recently broke a 25 year habit of smoking REAL cigarettes, which do (as Jim said) emit over 4,000 known chemicals, 69 of which are known without a doubt to cause cancer. Most e-cigarette cartridges contain 10 chemicals or less and NO known carcinogens. Do the math, moron. It's helped several people I know break long term habits where patches and gums just didn't cut it. People are desperate to quit and sometimes the patches and the gums and the audio tapes and CDs and the hypno programs just don't work. Some people can't get past the act of having a cigarette in their hand and in their mouth all the time. Using an e-cigarette enables the smoker to put it down whenever he/she wants to whether there is an ashtray or not without risking burning themselves, their furniture, kids, pets, and etcetera. Not being able to put it down whenever they want causes a mental commitment to smoke the whole thing instead of throwing it away (everyone hates wasting things they pay good money for) and being able to put it down whenever they want enables them to continue carrying on conversation or work/play/whatever and eventually forget to use it (as my boyfriend has several times since he purchased his). Stop slamming something you don't know anything about.

Geez Dumb Head, your headline is provocatively misleading - sounds like you're ready for a job in mainstream media!!! After checking out the site and a couple third-party reviews, this appears to be a pretty darn innovative product, a great way to kick the habit, or at least enjoy it without (most of) the undesirable side effects. I get the feeling you saw an opportunity to pass a snap judgment on something without checking it out. This is one hell of an idea, and from the looks of it, this company moved it from novel concept to functional product very successfully. While this certainly can't be called a “safe cigarette” (which probably won't ever exist since nicotine isn't safe), this looks like the first authentically “healthier” cigarette.

Listen, dumbhead. How in the hell can this be insane and stupid? First of all, the harmful ingredients that are produced when all sorts of stuff in a cig is burnt are what causes cancer. Hello? WTF?! Nicotine in and of itself is not necessarily bad at all for your system, and it is actually used medically for different purposes (look it up, bozo). Further, you can get cartridges that have ultra-light nicotine content. I speak from experience. I use my e-cig all the time. And I love it. It is not EXACTLY the same as smoke, but I am growing to like it more. AND: I am not ruining my lungs in the process. It's dumbasses like you that 1. sound like you have a contract for PR with JR Reynolds, and 2. Ruin an amazing idea for the late adopters. Pull your head out, do some actual research, and then write an article, idiot.

I've been around people smoking these, and trust me—it is FAR, FAR, FAR better than being around people smoking real cigarettes. There's barely any smell, and what smell is emitted from these e-cigarettes is certainly not anywhere near as nasty as the smell of a real cigarette. What's more, the vapors don't cut your breath or stick to your clothes. The people I know who use these are all former smokers of real cigarettes, some as heavy as 2 packs a day. Personally, I'm grateful for these e-cigarettes and happy that my friends were willing to switch. Knee-jerk government banning of these devices is typical, unfortunately—common sense could tell anyone that e-cigarettes should be available to all smokers.

I'm a non-smoker with smoker friends and I'm all for this. This really is a good thing and I don't get why places like Australia have banned it. Quitting is unrealistic for some people. This seems like a win-win. Not stupid, brilliant.

I've tried one and they are actually really cool — you “smoke” flavored vapor and it's mostly just to help get over the habits that go with smoking, not the nicotine addiction, necessarily.

I've seen people with these and honestly, I'd much rather stand next to the guy puffing on one of these at the bus stop than the multitude of smokers who often converge near the downtown Seattle bus stops. It didn't smell like anything, and I'm a former smoker. I wouldn't call them safe because when you get right down to it, nicotine isn't good for your body. However, if one does choose to take nicotine, inhaling this vapor is much better for you than sucking on a burning, chemical laden, tobacco filled tube. As far as how effective they are, the bus stop guy said that he's now primarily smoking his e-cigarette but still smokes an actual cig now and then. Others I've talked to have had similar experiences.
