Lena Dunham Apologizes For Her Tweet About Dressing Up As Murderers
After a joke on twitter about dressing up as The Ken and Barbie Killers for Halloween, Lena came under fire for what some called her offensive and unfunny humor. Personally, I kinda thought it was funny.

~DRE~ 7 months agoI am pretty liberal when it comes to humour but being from an area close enough to the action that not only did one of my girlfriends have Paul Bernardo came to her house during his Scarborough rapings (the police followed a trail of his that went right onto her porch and through her backyard) but also having a teacher who was a cousin of Leslie Mahaffy’s, I find this subject to be in extremely poor taste and unsympathetic to the many people affected by it. Just because it happened a long time ago does not mean that the terror and horror of it has faded from anyone’s mind who was unfortunate enough to live through it.

I have a feeling you might not be old enough to remember it when it was happening, or maybe you didn’t live close enough for it to really strike home, but for those of us that lived close to Scarborough or St Catherine’s it’s not something that is going away any time soon, and on no level is something like that funny or even mildly amusing.

pandorasmailbox 7 months agoI’m thinking that at least part of the issue is the fact that they’re not just dressing up as the killers… Lena specifically mentions dressing as Tammy Homolka, Karla’s younger sister. I won’t rehash the whole Bernardo/Homolka murders here, but essentially, Karla drugged Tammy (who was fifteen at the time) and “gave” her to Paul, who proceeded to sexually assault her along with Karla, while they filmed the whole thing. The drugs that were used to sedate Tammy weren’t administered properly, and she ended up choking and dying after the whole ordeal occurred. Paul and Karla tried to cover it up by calling an ambulance and claiming that Tammy had choked on her own vomit, but their lie obviously was unraveled. I know that it might not seem like a big deal, and I honestly don’t know where you’re from, but coming from Canada, this strikes me as honestly horrific. One of the worst parts of the Homolka case is the fact that Karla got out after serving about 1/3 of her prison sentence, despite the fact that she was responsible for the sexual assaults and deaths of three teenage girls (including Tammy). She had no parole restrictions placed on her when she was released. Oh, and the kicker? She has a child now. It’s a very sore spot for a lot of Canadians, because, like the Richardson family murders of 2006, you have a gruesome crime being committed by a young woman who winds up leaving prison with relatively little difficulty and is given the opportunity to go about freely for the rest of their lives, an opportunity that they failed to give their victims. It’s pretty much the case that people cite when pointing out the flaws in our justice system. TL;DR In terms of Halloween costumes, “high school sophomore raped and killed by her sister and brother-in-law” is a really poor choice.
