Twitter's Favourite Swear Words Revealed

An academic report carried out by researchers the Ohio Center of Excellence in Knowledge-enabled Computing reveals the following quite interesting facts. NSFW language.

1. One in 13 tweets contains a swear word.

"It’s a sizable fraction of the words we use,'" Wenbo Wang, the PhD researcher who led the study, told Fastco. "Because of social media, people don’t see each other. They can say things they wouldn’t say in the physical world."

2. The most popular swear word is "Fuck".

3. Generally people are not very imaginative, tending to draw from a narrow range of swear words.

The top seven swear words cover more than 90% of all the swear word occurrences.

4. We swear more during the early part of the week.

5. Swearing peaks late at night.

People curse more and more as the day passes, reaching a peak at 12am to 1.30am. before bedtime, and Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays contain the most curse words relative to tweet volume.

6. And men swear more than women.

According to the report: "Men curse more than women, men overuse some curse words different from what women use and vice versa, and both men and women are more likely to curse in the same-gender contexts."
