A waitress from Indianapolis laid it all out for us in black and white.

Bongwater 2 months agoI do believe in tipping to be sure, but don’t forget that some states DO pay restaurant and tipped employees the same minimum wage as all other occupations, Washington state for one, with one of the best Minimum wages in the country at 9.19/hr for everyone alike, for what it’s worth..

PepperPepper 2 months agoIgnorant fools who have never worked in a restaurant and don’t understand the business are the only assholes who tip like shit. If you don’t understand the concept of tipping, stay home, and if you come to my restaurant after you’ve been a shitty tipper, don’t expect the same level of service. You can suck it.

C101Monte 2 months agoIf you are going to complain, do it in a song. Otherwise no one will listen. Just don’t expect more than a $1.29 tip for your song. I went to the UK once. First thing, I hit the bar ordered a pint, tipped a pound. The bartender gave it back. He told me you don’t tip there. That was awesome. Save the torches and pitchforks though, I’m a good little tipper.

SitaSky 2 months agoI always tip when I go out to eat and I tip well, even when I get bad service. When I get exceptionally horrid service which has happened two times that I can recall I didn’t tip because they really didn’t deserve it. I’ve never been a waiter but I’ve worked in a restaurant and in customer service so I know how it feels to work in that environment and I respect it but I won’t tip if I get really really bad service, it’s just not fair if I went out to have a good time with my boyfriend/friends/family and the whole experience got ruined because our waiter was so crappy and we even had to call over the manager. But for the most part I’ve always gotten good service and I always tip at least 20%.

mavjade 2 months agoI pay major attention to what is going on when I go to a restaurant. How many tables the waiter/waitress seems to have, how busy they restaurant seems to be, I don’t factor in the food in tipping (not that persons fault if the food was bad) and I take these things into account. I almost always tip at least 20 to 25% (only for really bad service to I go under, and NO lower that 10%) and I’ve given as much as a 50% tip before. I try and always tip in cash so they can claim whatever they want as the tip. I have no problem tipping, I actually enjoy it if I got great service.
All that being said, I HATE the fact that it’s mandatory. Servers should be paid a living wage and a tip should be given for great service, not because it’s mandatory. The cost of my food should include the cost of paying everyone who has anything to do with it. I also hate how much I’m hearing about it recently. I realize there are people who need to be educated, who have never worked in a service industry who don’t know how crappy it can be sometimes. But I don’t like feeling guilty for going out to eat, no matter how much I tip and that’s exactly the way it’s starting to make me feel. I almost don’t want to go out at all, and I love to eat out. :( -

jbaumann035 2 months agoGood. Lord. We ARE thankful we have jobs. We’re NOT thankful when we do a good job and are rewarded by not getting tipped. I agree that sometimes the tipping thing gets overblown. If a server does a bad job, they don’t really deserve a good tip (as a server, I agree with this), and most servers do know when they’ve done a bad job. It’s not a social “courtesy”; it’s an expectation for services rendered and the standard for doing their job.

Odium44 2 months agoTips help ensure your service level (the next time you come). If you don’t like good service at your local eatery, then don’t tip the staff. If you don’t like getting stiffed, then don’t be a server (line-cooks make a decent wage for legit work - no tips necessary). While I can feel the pain of the server, I cooked for 8 years and most servers are spoiled and self-entitled. Most (MOST, not ALL) work a 3 - 4 hour shift, it’s not easy, but most days they make 50 - 100 bucks an hour. The folks that cook your food make less, work harder and longer shifts, and get treated like criminals.

jbaumann035 2 months agoI have no idea where you worked that a server made $50-100 an hour. Maybe in the highest tier restaurants, but my serving experience was not like that. I got to work at 4pm and didn’t leave til usually 9 or 10pm. On a good night, I made 70 bucks perhaps. Certainly above minimum wage, so I’m not complaining, but nowhere near the overblown numbers you cite. I think it’s unfair to say anyone working in the kitchen works more or less hard than servers. We all work hard, but in different ways. I agree some servers I knew were terrible to the kitchen staff, but it went both directions.

Odium44 2 months agoI’ll conceed that we work equally difficult and frustrating jobs… more or less. I worked at Chili’s (not exactly highest tier) and when I say server, I mean lounge and bar workers. Servers in the bar area make 50 an hour easy (observed as both a manager and a server’s “roommate”), usually start at 6ish and most are gone before 10.

jessiel5 2 months agoFirst of all, I would like to say that I try to tip 15% to 20%, so please don’t harass me because of my future statements. I realize your wage sucks. However, there is a reason that you stay in the business you are in. You are not forced to be in it. When giving you my well earned money, I feel there is a standard that I deserve, to give you what you deserve in return. I work in customer service so I realize that some people suck. But as a customer, when I order a water because I genuinely want water or don’t want to pay $3.50 for a fountain drink (which is actually only about 5 cents a fill—also a reason why most establishments give their employees free fountain), I don’t feel I deserve to be put on a side burner. You just made a judgement of me that I won’t tip well, making you fulfill a self-fulfilling prophecy. You get a tip on the service provide. If the customer sees you only for their order, dropping off their food, and the bill— you don’t deserve the full tip. That is bad customer service. I also find that those people are the people bitching about their wages. You reap what you sew. I understand some nights are busier than others, so it is difficult. HOWEVER, if you work at the Cheesecake factory or Olive Garden or a similar establishment which is always busy, you should conform to a better service standard. Which brings me to the fact that if you work at one of those places and are still getting minimum wage for waiters, maybe you should argue for better pay, because their jacked up prices for their plates should funnel into your check a bit. That money goes somewhere, maybe it isn’t always the customers fault, maybe its the industry you work in. Just a thought. Please stop poor ole’ pitiful me-ing this situation. Like I stated earlier, you chose the industry, so there must be something in it for you.

jbaumann035 2 months agoSure, we “choose” the industry, but sometimes it’s the only industry available. The other side of the coin is this: as a customer, you know the expectations. I don’t think most servers are complaining about getting bad tips when they do a bad job; that’s part of the job (although I would argue that there are some industries that simply pay by the hour regardless of how good or bad one’s work is). It’s the people that simply don’t tip or don’t know tipping standards when they still get good service—I’ve seen it plenty of times. I used to be a server, and a good one to boot. I actually quite enjoyed the work, and MOST people were good tippers. If I did a decent job and got at least about a 15% tip, I didn’t complain. It’s when I did a great job, busted my ass (especially when someone was particularly demanding) and STILL got a shitty tip that would get me annoyed, because it was usually a result of someone not knowing the standard or simply not caring to follow it. THAT’S where most (legitimate) complaints come from.

thecultofpop 2 months agoCan’t reply to comments on mobile, but @delainaa, a true gentleman does not pay in front of his date. It’s just as poor etiquette to be flashing your bill and how much you are spending on someone. And to all the people arguing over whether you can tip more than average & still disagree with tipping, I tip average to above average for my country (depending on level of service, but min. is average) and when people complain about tipping it’s annoying. In the case of the article, yes she can obviously complain, but where minimum wage is much higher & tips are just bonus, don’t complain.

maxinecallejau 2 months agoWhy are restaurants allowed to pay waiters so little in America though? Waiters have to get at least minimum wage here and you still get tips. Tips are more like 10% if you’re happy with your experience though, so it’s a little less.
