Maybe I missed the point of Don Lemon’s argument or maybe you did but I say his statements as an act of tough love. Men like Lil’ Wayne can walk around tattooed, with tons of babies mother’s because at the end of the day he still has millions in the bank. Jaekwon from around the block can do the same and he will end up under employed perpetuating stereotypes that really do not define who he is as a person. I think Don was trying to call into question identity. Many African American’s need to wake up because this country we live in has a set of rules. Either set up and play the game or become a victim of other people’s actions. As a African American youth the odds are against you so don’t make things even harder on yourself. Why do we have this desire to hang on to current rap culture as it is packaged to us? Baggy pants and the popularity of the n-word are creation of the white music machine that exploited the art form of rap for profit. Lil’ Wayne’s image is not black culture; it is a means of oppression to keep you blinded by what is really going on. The way he talks and dresses sell records because it is provocative. A person like Lil’ Wayne is the worst role model for a young person who cannot distinguish between truth and clever marketing. Does anyone remember the beginnings of hip hop? It was a positive force a kin to poetry. Then it became a multi-million dollar business and the rest is history. We need better things for our kids to aspire to. We need to help our kids understand that getting an education is taking care of yourself and taking care of your self contributes to society and contributing to society paves the way for future generations. What Don Lemon is saying may be criticism, but it is the truth. How has anyone ever not benefited from not littering, properly planning for a family, wearing clothes that fit, and getting an education? I do not think he is asking people to whitewash themselves. Its not about right or wrong. He is telling them to take responsibility for actions, because no one is obligated to give you anything in this world.
