I worked for a small construction company as an admin. The boss was decent at first, but then started getting fire happy. This in an office of like 10. Six months after I am hired, he basically tells me he wants me to replace the office manager, who I was friends with. Thankfully it didn’t come to fruition, I would have declined it. So a few months go by, this guy slowly turns from Jekyll to Hyde. We learn his wife of like 15 years is divorcing him, so we can understand his attitude. As the admin, I would edit the repair bids for him and one day he went nuclear at me over the phone over something small, can’t remember. I called HR and complained about it. The next Monday, the office manager and I come in and see our final check on our desks. We were official “laid off” so we qualified for unemployment. Well, fast forward one year. The office manager and I kept it touch, seem boss man went off the deep end after she and I left. He blamed her and I for his failed marriage. He was terminated by the corporate office, having worked for the company for 10 years. The office moved to a downtown location. The remaining employees would keep the doors locked during business hours, afraid he would come in shooting. Sad and tragic ending, he ended up committing suicide a year after he laid off the office manager and me. This was my first professional job after college and it taught me to never take abuse at work and I never will.
