Peruvian Police End Wedding At Underground Gay Bar

Peruvian national police raided an underground gay bar in the city of Pucallpa last week to shut down a same-sex wedding ceremony.

One member of the couple, who was wearing a wedding dress, was detained by police, while the other man fled, according to Peruvian media reports.

There is no law against holding such ceremonies in Peru, although only heterosexual marriages are legally recognized.

George Liendo of the the national sexual rights organization Promsex told BuzzFeed that the organization is demanding an explanation from the Minister of Interior, contending the police violated protections for free assembly.
