Then Vs. Now: Paris In The Early 1900s

These beautiful hand-colored lantern photos prove that Paris hasn't changed all that much.

    1. Then: The Église Saint-Augustin, in the 8th arrondissement.

Now: No more trolly tracks in the road.

    2. Then: Looking down the Seine near Ile de la Cité.

    Now: Not much has changed.

    3. Then: Hôtel de Ville (city hall of Paris)

    Now: Virtually unchanged.

    4. Then: The Place Vendôme in the early 1900s.

Now: Still home to the Ritz Paris, but paved and cleaner.

    5. Then: The Paris opera house on a busy day.

Now: Still a major tourist attraction.

    6. Then: Pedestrians and carriages on Pont Neuf.

Now: Similar and you can see the iconic La Samaritaine building (a now defunct department store); the building was completed in 1933.

    7. Then: Les Bouquinistes, booksellers lining the banks of the Seine.

    Now: Still a tradition.

    8. Then: Flower-buying, looking towards the Right Bank.

Today: On certain days of the week, you can still purchase flowers at the Marché aux Fleurs in the same spot.

    9. Then: Pont St. Michel, looking towards Ile de la Cité, the steeples of St. Chapelle clearly visible.

Now: A government building has replaced what were local businesses.

    10. Then: The Bourse (the Paris bank).

Now: Additions were added in the early 1900s to create a cross-style layout. Now, it's more of an event and conference space.

    11. Then: Rue de Rivoli at the northeast corner of the Tuileries.

Now: Very similar, minus the dapper top hats and umbrellas.

    12. Then: L'église de la Madeleine in the 8th arrondissement.

Now: It would appear even the trees are still there!

    13. Then: Rue de la Paix and its famous obelisk.

Now: The same. Except more traffic.
