9 Foreign Language Versions Of Songs By The Original Artists

It’s amazing how singing a song in another language makes it instantly better.

1. David Bowie, “Heroes (Helden)” in German

A song about lovers kissing by the Berlin Wall. So it’s only fitting Bowie did this magnificent version in German

2. Rolling Stones, “As Tears Go By (Con le mie lacrime)” in Italian

Released as a B-Side to “As Tears Go By” in Italy, this has become something of a cult classic among Stones fans.

3. Blur, “To the End” in French

There’s also a version knocking about featuring Francoise Hardy with added accordion to really crank up the Frenchness.

4. They Might Be Giants, “Number Three” in Greek

Short, sweet and Greek

5. The Beatles, “I Want To Hold Your Hand (Komm gib mir deine Hand)” in German

Rather like Bowie, The Beatles were keen Teutophiles. See also “Sie Leibt Dich” (She Loves You)

6. Johnny Cash, “Ring Of Fire (Fuego D’Amor)” in Spanish

There’s a mariachi band for crying out loud.

7. Marvin Gaye, “How Sweet It Is (Wie Schon Das Ist)” in German

As if Marvin wasn’t quite cool enough…

8. Dionne Warwick, “Walk on By (Ger Vorbei)” in German

Another soulful classic in German

9. ABBA, “Dancing Queen (Reina Danzante)” in Spanish

Like any good wedding, let’s finish on “Dancing Queen”… in Spanish
