I would advocate a boycott of the games if I felt it would make a difference. However, when athlete’s refuse to attend their stance is quickly forgotten.
What we really need is all the athletes to attend and make their views known, through a public display against the policies of the Russian government. In 1968 in Mexico, Tommie Smith and John Carlos made worldwide news with their famous black hand salute during the medal ceremony. This gesture had more impact than any protests through absence. If our athletes, both openly gay and straight can make some sort of symbolic protest. Whether its through wearing badge, gay pride colours or during an interview then it will do more to bring political pressure on Russia and highlight their human rights abuses.
