The DC animated universe (DCAU) is a fan term for a series of popular animated television series and related spin-offs produced by Warner Bros. Animation which share the same continuity. Most of these series are adapted from DC Comics properties. It lasted from 1992 to 2006.

Terry McGinnis proved that there will always be a need for Batman and Batman can still be a badass even though, he's a senior in high school. Terry was basically created from scratch for the spin-off to Batman: The Animated Series called, Batman Beyond (1999-2001).

2. It brought you movies like, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

This 1993 film is legendary and is critically acclaimed. It's probably the best animated superhero movies of all-time!. It was released in theaters (originally it was not going to be) but it was a box office bomb due to the decision to release the film in theaters on a short notice. The film has since found cult success.

Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998)

This 1998 direct to video animated film will probably leave you in tears by the end of it. It was originally delayed because of the universal panning of the 1997 movie, Batman & Robin. This movie, however, was loved by a lot of critics.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000)

Known as Batman of the Future: Return of the Joker in Europe and Australia. This 2000 direct-to-video animated film was critically acclaimed. Before its release, the movie was heavily edited to remove scenes of extreme violence, and some dialogue was altered, thus creating the "Not-Rated" version of the movie. The original version was subsequently released on DVD following an online petition to have the original version released. It received a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for violence, the first animated Batman film and from Warner Bros. Family Entertainment to do so.

Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003)

This 2003 direct-to-video animated film was the last film to be released during DCAU. It gained mixed to positive reviews from critics.

The series aired on Fox Kids from September 5, 1992 to September 15, 1995. Batman: TAS was critically acclaimed and won 4 Emmy Awards including Outstanding Animated Program. The show spawned the movie, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000)

Superman: TAS originally aired on The WB Television Network (Kids' WB) from September 6, 1996 to February 12, 2000. It was the 1st of several spin-offs to Batman: TAS and was critically acclaimed.

The New Batman Adventures (1997-1999)

It was originally going to be named Batman: Gotham Knights but it was rejected and changed. It aired on The WB Television Network (Kids' WB) from September 13, 1997 to January 16, 1999. It takes place about the same time period as Batman: TAS.

Batman Beyond (1999-2001)

Known as Batman of the Future in Europe, Latin America, Australia and India. Batman Beyond was an edgy, cool new spin on Batman. Batman Beyond aired from January 10, 1999 to December 18, 2001 on The WB Television Network (Kids' WB). Batman Beyond was basically created from scratch and was acclaimed by critics. Batman Beyond was considerably darker than most other children's programs at the time, although producer Bruce Timm recalls it was conceived as a kid-friendly Batman cartoon. It is also the first Batman series to portray the hero as a teenager. It spawned the animated movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

Static Shock (2000-2004)

Static Shock ran from September 23, 2000 to May 22, 2004 on The WB Television Network (Kids' WB). The series centers on the adventures of DC Comics superhero Virgil Hawkins aka Static.

The Zeta Project (2001-2002)

The Zeta Project was a spin-off series based on the character Zeta from the Batman Beyond episode of the same name. It ran from January 27, 2001 to August 10, 2002 on The WB Television Network (Kids' WB).

Justice League (2001-2004)

Justice League ran from November 17, 2001 to May 29, 2004 on Cartoon Network and The WB Television Network (Kids' WB). It was acclaimed by critics.

Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006)

Justice League Unlimited ran from July 31, 2004 to May 13, 2006 on Cartoon Network. It was the last show apart of DCAU. It was the continuation of Justice League (2001-2004) and was universally loved by critics.

4. Honorary DCAU show: Teen Titans

Teen Titans was the smash hit teen superhero sidekick show that aired on Cartoon and The WB Television Network (Kids' WB) from July 19, 2003 to January 16, 2006. It wasn't officially apart of DCAU but it ran during the same time as DCAU, features characters from DC Comics and was produced by Warner Bros. Animation (just like all DCAU shows). Thus, I name it an honorary DCAU show.
