#IStandWithGillianTriggs Is Just The Latest Time Twitter Has Stood For Someone

Surely your legs are getting tired.

The hashtag #IStandWithGillianTriggs started trending on Tuesday after Professor Gillian Triggs, the Australian Human Rights Commission president, appeared at a Senate Estimates hearing.

Professor Triggs has been under fire in recent weeks, accused by government figures of partisanship and politicking surrounding the release of The Forgotten Children report into children in detention.

Prime Minister Abbott and Senator George Brandis have spoken openly against Professor Triggs, saying she has lost the confidence of the Australian people.

In Tuesday's Senate hearing, it was revealed Senator George Brandis's top bureaucrat Chris Moraitis told Professor Triggs that she would be offered a senior government role if she stood down from her position, sparking a police investigation into an alleged breach of the criminal code.

Defying government pressure to stand down, Professor Triggs has said she will continue her work with the AHRC. And then Twitter got involved.

The Twittersphere is powerful Stand up against the Abbott Government's bullying of @GillianTriggs #IStandWithGillianTriggs

#IStandWithGillianTriggs because we need people still brave enough to report without fear or favour.

And Gillian Triggs became the latest in a long line of people Twitter has stood up for.

Also on Tuesday, Australians on Twitter stood with Mariam Veiszadeh, a lawyer, writer and Muslim advocate who had been receiving Islamophobic threats and abuse online.
