The Evolution Of Taylor Swift's Feminist Awakening

With a little help from her friend Lena Dunham, Swift says she now identifies as a feminist.

For some time, Taylor Swift shied away from the feminist label.

When The Daily Beast asked Swift if she was a feminist back in 2012, she said:

The pop star's fans still insisted that she empowered other women.

And some even went to extremes to show how feminist and T. Swift go together:

Maybe we got lost in translation / Maybe I asked for too much / But maybe equal pay and control over my own body are reasonable demands?

Romeo, save me / They're trying to tell me how to feel / Modern feminism is difficult / But it's real / -ly important

But in an interview with The Guardian, Swift is now calling herself a feminist. Loud and proud.

According to Beyoncé, Chimamanda Adichie, and Merriam-Webster, this is the definition of the word "feminist":

She even credits her friend Lena Dunham for helping her come into her feminist awakening.

Dunham *applauded* T. Swift for her ability to grow and change in such a public way.

Applause for @taylorswift13's spot on definition of feminism (and NOT because she mentions me) http://t.co/0JiLTgBz3d

Taylor recognizes that at its core it's not about radicalism or rage, but equality. Her willingness to own the term means much to many...

She's been my feminist role model for a long time. And I cannot fucking wait for her VMA performance.

When someone grows, changes and shows their vulnerability and evolution publicly... That's a gift they give to us that we should honor.

    Congrats, Taylor.

    Welcome to the club.
