21 Reasons Everyone Should Love "Sixteen Candles"

"That's why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they'd call them something else."

On May 4, 1984, the world was introduced to the classic John Hughes film, Sixteen Candles, and our lives have never been the same.

Because it's literally the best movie of all time.

    1. It's impossible not to love and relate to Sam Baker, a sophomore in high school who suffers from a bout of unrequited love.

    2. The movie is filled with *SO* much teenage angst and high school drama. We've all been there, to be honest.

    3. Also, Sam's family FORGETS HER 16TH BIRTHDAY, which is the best plot but also worst thing to ever possibly happen.

    (Seriously, who does that?!)

    4. The Baker family's major mistake definitely helped cement them as one of the most iconic fams in '80s movie history.

    5. The most iconic family member of all being Sam's older sister, Ginny, whose upcoming wedding is the whole reason the Baker family was too busy to remember her 16th birthday.

    6. She was really full of some big sis wisdom, that Ginny.

    7. Luckily, friendship is another strong theme in the movie and Sam has someone to lament to when things don't always go her way.

    8. Now, let's get back to that whole unrequited love thing. Jake Ryan, Sam's crush and absolute heartthrob, is a TOTAL babe.

    (Same.)

    9. She's pretty much invisible to him. So relatable.

    10. So she ends up becoming temporary BFFs with Ted, the nerdy guy who she usually gives a hard time to, because he actually takes the time to listen to her. It's the sweetest moment!

    11. And she realizes he's actually a good dude, showing us how important it is to really give people a chance.

    12. Not to mention, who could ever forget this iconic panties scene?

    13. Plus, Sixteen Candles features none other than a young John Cusack! How can you *NOT* love a movie with young John Cusack?!

    14. The dynamic between Jake Ryan and Ted (or Farmer Ted, as they also call him) is truly hilarious.

    15. Despite their unlikely bond and friendship, Jake ends up confiding in Ted and the geeky high schooler gives him the real confidence he needs to follow his heart.

    16. And that's exactly what he does! Jake goes home from the party and shows us all that he's not just a popular jock by entertaining his interest in Sam!

    😍 😍 😍

    17. This ~emotional~ moment between Sam and her dad is really the best and taught us all an important lesson about young love.

    18. After a long, long night, even Ted ends up sharing a special moment with Caroline, the super popular girl at school...

...which is complete redemption! Because even though his peers aren't always the nicest to him, Ted totally deserves his own happiness.

    19. Most importantly, Jake Ryan finally comes around and admits he has a crush on Sam, too, which is exactly what she wanted all along! (Who cares that it's her sister's wedding day?!)

    20. If only all of our 16th birthdays could go down like this.

    21. BEST. MOVIE. EVER.
