This advice is pretty stupid.
A. DO NOT DUMPSTER DIVE. Not only is it unsanitary, it’s also probably illegal in your city.
B. Sure, you can buy spices at the dollar store, if you want gross, flavorless, nearly expired spices that may as well be cardboard dust. Instead, buy spices at your local ethnic market; they usually package them themselves (from bulk) so they are much cheaper and fresh. You can also usually get cheap meat and fish (and a greater variety), rice and produce at ethnic markets (plus discover delicious new sauces) C. Aside from deer (which I don’t like), rabbit and certain game birds… you’re pretty SOL on hunting your own food. I don’t think I can go out and hunt for chickens or cows… Also, to legally hunt and fish is pretty expensive, you have to have equipment, licenses, $ to spend on a hunting/fishing trip (since you can’t do it in your backyard), park permits or you have to know someone that owns hunting land (since you can’t just go trespassing) plus money to process your kill and a sizable freezer to keep it in. Instead, find an actual butcher (not in a big box grocery store), become part of a grocery co-op or find your local farmers. C. Instead of paying $6 for a roast chicken, roast your own, they are frequently on sale and roasting chicken is pretty frickin simple. Also, 1 potato is probably not going to feed a family of 4, and you probably want something more than plain lettuce on your salad, thus making your meal more than $10.
