A piece of mechanical wizardry that assist its users to assume running pace when they are walking and walking pace when they are stationary. An engineering marvel some might say. The “some” being our forefathers/mothers back in the mid-1800s (when it was invented). The hardworking and introverted hero; the one that carries the burden of man’s lazy ass up and down, and to and fro; the one that gives it all for nothing in return; the one that gets stepped on, spat at, vandalized and most often misused as a shoe polisher or a chewing gum “stick-on”. Two hundred years on, the machine -that serves valiantly to civilization need for speed- has gone unnoticed and unappreciated. It’s time we give the escalator the honor it truly deserves.
