40 Signs That You Attended An International School In Asia

Because you don't stick out enough already.

    1. You went to the same school with the same kids for 14 years of your life.

    2. You shared all your most defining moments with your friends, from naming your first crushes to spending your first night out on the town (legally).

    3. Speaking of being legal, you know how it feels to go from drinking legally in high school...

    4. ...to being illegal in college again.

    5. But you're happy staying in. Going out back home meant poppin' bubbly in da club.

    6. Not finding yourself sprawled on a beer-sticky floor with people twerking on your face.

    7. Your school lunch was like the intercontinental selection at a Vegas buffet.

    8. You speak at least two languages fluently.

    9. You're also really good at butchering and smushing those languages together.

    10. You also listen to music and watch dramas from fellow Asian countries and inevitably pick up some of that language.

    11. You still occasionally spell things the British way.

    12. You take the "lift", not the "elevator".

    13. And that stuff coming out of your mouth? It's "rubbish", not "garbage".

    14. If you didn't piano, you violin-ed.

    15. Your second home was at Princeton review.

    16. Summer school was a must starting from your tweenage years and onwards.

    17. A 10+ hour flight? No biggie.

    18. You're crazy good at calculating time differences.

    19. You can convert degrees from Celsius to Fahrenheit, and vice versa.

    20. You're good at juggling currencies, but still think in your home currency.

    21. And by the way, don't you miss how you could actually afford food back home?

    22. You're always thinking, "I could buy *insert number* of *insert cheap Asian food* instead of this expensive, wilted salad."

    23. Meeting people from your country is not uncommon.

    24. And when you do, you realize that the two-degrees-of-separation-thing is true.

    25. And that other kid who went to some other international school in Asia? Yeah, he's a friend of a friend who was also at SeoulMUN the same time as you. And no way, his cousin's mother is your aunt?

    26. Also - OMG - what are the chances that you went to Koh Samui for your graduation trip?

    27. And - NO WAY - you partied with people from your rival schools?

    28. You always wonder what on earth people outside of Asia are taught about Asia.

    29. Because they're always introducing you to the exotic foods of the west.

    30. You're tired of being asked why you can "speak English good".

    31. Or don't have an accent.

    32. And tired of explaining that you don't own a pet panda, let alone ride one around.

    33. You grow accustomed to people around you being weirded out by the things you eat.

    34. You have a list of which Asian foods you can bring out of the country.

    35. You wake up in the middle of the night with insane cravings for Asian street food.

    36. Because you were slurping down all kinds of milk tea while other people were still being breastfed.

    37. Whenever you leave home, the first thing to do is gather a list of the best Asian restaurants in town.

    38. No wifi = no Whatsapp or Viber.

    39. Sometimes, the homesickness is unbearable.

    40. But ultimately, you're a third culture kid, and you can power through.
